Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut oil work well)
  • Honey or powdered sugar for serving

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well to ensure the baking powder is evenly distributed.
  2. Add the Wet Ingredients: Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the vegetable oil or melted butter. Gradually add the warm water, stirring with a fork or your hands until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
  4. Rest the Dough: Place the dough back in the mixing bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rest for about 20-30 minutes. This resting period helps the dough relax, making it easier to roll out.
  5. Roll Out the Dough: After the dough has rested, divide it into 2-3 smaller portions for easier handling. Roll each portion out on a lightly floured surface until it’s about 1/8 inch thick. Cut the dough into 3-4 inch squares or triangles.
  6. Heat the Oil: In a deep frying pan or pot, heat about 2 inches of oil to 375°F (190°C). To test if the oil is ready, drop a small piece of dough into the oil. If it sizzles and rises to the surface, the oil is ready for frying.
  7. Fry the Sopapillas: Carefully place a few pieces of dough into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and puffed up. Use a slotted spoon to remove the sopapillas from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate.
  8. Serve and Enjoy: While the sopapillas are still warm, drizzle them with honey or dust them with powdered sugar. Serve immediately and enjoy their crispy, airy goodness.

Tips and Variations

  • Sweet and Savory: Sopapillas can also be enjoyed with savory fillings. Try stuffing them with beans, cheese, and your favorite toppings for a unique twist.
  • Cinnamon Sugar: For a sweeter treat, toss the warm sopapillas in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar instead of powdered sugar.
  • Storage: Sopapillas are best enjoyed fresh, but you can store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat them in the oven to restore their crispiness.
